The trajectory of ‚ByLock‘ is a fascinating tale of a once-legitimate application that underwent a drastic transformation in a single night. Initially operating within the bounds of legality until 2016, ‚ByLock‘ suddenly found itself on the wrong side of the law in a swift and unexpected turn of events. This shift in status raises intriguing questions about the factors and decisions that led to its abrupt transformation from a lawful app to one deemed illegal.
ByLock emerged in 2014 as a smartphone application facilitating private, encrypted communication for users. Accessible through prominent platforms such as Google Play, Apple App Store, BlackBerry OS, and Windows Phone, the app garnered over 600,000 downloads from its launch in April 2014 until its definitive shutdown in March 2016.
The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MİT) revealed that ByLock found its primary user base in Turkey. Attributed to a certain David Keynes according to the application’s security certificate, an interview with Hürriyet Daily News shed light on Keynes claiming that the actual developer was a former flatmate. Keynes asserted that this individual had utilized his credit card to publish ByLock on the Apple App Store. Additionally, Keynes emphasized that ByLock had been unavailable since January 2016 during the interview.
